Interview with Duncan Palamourdas of ‘Why Alex Beats Bobbie At Poker’

I loved Why Alex Beats Bobbie at Poker. Duncan Palamourdas has a gift for conveying poker strategy through stories and examples.

You might think a math guy like Duncan (he teaches math and poker at UCLA) would write an overly complicated and hard-to-digest math-heavy book, but nothing could be further from the truth.

He blends strategy and math into easy-to-understand examples and relatable real-world scenarios.

This book is a must-read and I had a great time discussing it and other poker stuffs with Duncan.

Read Duncan’s detailed article:

Duncan and I discuss Alex, Bobbie and loads of other things:

He’ll eventually record an audiobook version! I’ll be the first to buy it.

My favorite chapter: #8 Give a Man a Fish and He May Turn Into One. If you read only one chapter, this is it as it covers the crucial things Alex does to beat Bobbie.

Alex maintains her stack and builds it, Bobbie’s stack gradually decreases. They both get AA at the end of their session, and Alex makes more from it with her healthier stack than Bobbie’s.

Page 236: The hidden costs of limping. Limping IS NOT cheaper than raising. Junk food is cheaper than healthy food, but there are hidden costs.

Duncan gives a 2-part answer for the question, “What’s the first thing a losing player should do to improve their skills?”

Duncan recently tweeted this:

I ask Duncan his own question and we find out his answer. I would choose the same. What about you?
